1 Title: A Case for Feminism in Programming Language Design

3 Abstract: Why does the programming language community lack diversity? The
4 authors of this paper make a case for the use of feminist theory as a critical
5 thinking tool to analyse intellectual and cultural norms contributing to
6 marginalization in the community. They argue it ultimately limits the array of
7 research being produced and demographic diversity. We will use the paper as an
8 opportunity to question our own biases in knowledge production both in what we
9 deem of interest and the methodologies we believe to be valid. Indeed feminism
10 and the ethics of care seem like promising stepping stones towards the goals of
11 my PhD thesis, namely designing a suite of sustainable, resilient and
12 empowering software tools for IT infrastructure.
